United Methodist Women

Who we are:
The organized unit of United Methodist Women shall be
a community of women whose PURPOSE is to know God
and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus
Christ; to develop a creative, supportive fellowship; and
to expand concepts of mission through participation in the
global ministries of the church.

UMW History
The beginnings of the UMW actually started in 1869 when the Woman's Foreign Missionary
Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church was founded. The name had many changes during the years according to the changes that were occurring within the Methodist religion. In 1939 the Woman's Society of Christian Service was the name after the Methodist Episcopal (ME), the Methodist Episcopal Southern (MES), and the Methodist Protestant (MP) Churches merged to become the Methodist (M) Church.
We became known as the (UMW), United Methodist Women when the Methodist (M) and
Evangelical United Brethren (EUB) Churches merged to form the United Methodist Church in 1968.
Our basic function is to be a missionary outreach for Christ and our church throughout our
community and surrounding areas. We undertake many projects (some annually and some new) every year to spread the works and the Word of God to as many as possible.

Any woman who attends our church is actually a member of UMW. We are always inviting women to come
and join with us and hope that they feel free to do so. We are a lively group and enjoy a wonderful commradary working for the Lord.
Some of our activities include: making quilts for the Berea Children's Home,
selling homemade peanut butter eggs, and sponsoring the mitten and scarf tree for the local elementary school.
